THE LUANDA DECLARATION

 

 The Council of the SADC Lawyers Association meeting in Luanda, Republic of Angola, on 26 February 2000, having reaffirmed its commitment to the objectives of the Association,

resolved:

 

1.     To foster stronger relationships and cooperation amongst members and  other Organizations within the SADC region which have similar  objectives to the Association;

2.     To promote a culture of democracy and the rule of law and enjoyment of Human Rights within the SADC region;

3.     To work towards the harmonization of ethical practices and legal systems in the region;

4.     To cooperate in the training of lawyers, exchange programs and similar activities aimed at enhancing legal human resources in the region;

5.     To encourage a speedy, inexpensive, just and equitable resolution of disputes in the region, through the normal judicial system, arbitration, mediation and any other forms of alternative disputes resolution;

6.     To support efforts to eradicate the scourge of conflicts; and

7.     Finally, to support the aspirations of the people of the SADC region in their quest for peace, development, social justice and equality, particularly the right of the people of Angola to pursue all legitimate means to bring about peace and development in their country.
